How do you fact-check information?

Often it's about double checking the information mentioned during the interview, and verifying it from a secondary source. Sometimes it's about going back to the original source and going over the details together.

What makes a ‘trusted’ source?

For the stories I write, "trusted" is less about professional credentials, and more about being an authority on a topic.

One of the challenges in sharing Indigenous stories is the expectation in journalism that experts are from academic or high-level positions. Indigenous knowledge isn't always quantified by those types of roles.

The other side of this is dealing with sources who misrepresent their background, which adds an unfortunate layer of complexity and work for the journalist.

Reading past headlines: why should we do it?

Reading past headlines is similar to reading past the tweet. Most stories are complex and nuanced and require the space to provide the full story. In addition, the journalist who spent the most time with the story often isn't responsible for writing the headline.
